Noted in History of Morgan County, Ohio,by Charles Robertson, MD (Chicago: LH Watkins, 1886) pp.287-8, as coming from New Jersey to Perry County, OH in 1816 and from then to Deaverton where he married Miss Margaret Dodds and reared a family of five children.
Robert Holcombe, listed in the 1850 Census of York Township, Morgan County, Ohio, was an active advocate of the abolition of slavery and helped slaves to escape to freedom in Canada by the Underground Railroad. He was a merchant and farmer. McPherson, op cit, p. 271, col 2.

In the 1860 Census of Deavertown, York Twp, Morgan Co, OH, the family is fully listed with Prudence, Leroy S, Mary E, Adda F, and Charles F; and Robert's occupation is "master carpenter" (HOLCOMB ROBERT 47 M W NJ OH MORGAN YORK TWP 1860; Series: M653 Roll: 1016 Page: 528). Perhaps he had become skilled in building false bottoms on carts or other devices to hide escaping slaves.

By the 1870 Census only Mary E. and Charles, a carpenter, were at home with the parents. They were still living in York Twp, with the Post Office of Malsa. The value of his real estate was $1,800. (HOLCOMB ROBERT 58 M W NJ OH MORGAN YORK TWP 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 1246 Page: 256).

In 1880 Robert is found with daughters "Ella" and Ada at home with Ada's husband and her four children (HOLCOMB ROBERT 68 W NJ OH MORGAN DEAVERTOWN; YORK 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 1053 Page: 210).
