John married Susan Condon in the 1860's, in Kent County, Michigan who was also born in Canada. Their children were Ina Belle Baker (1866-1912); Adeline (1872-1874); Minnie (1874-1941); Clayton Charles (1876-1959) and Grace Mae (1880-1956). At the time of Grace's birth, they were living in Nirvana, Lake County, Michigan.
In 1879, John received 80 acres in Cherry Valley Township, Lake County, Michigan and his brother, Dilman, received 160 acres.
John and Susan separated in 1888 and she moved to Muskegon. Clayton, their son, moved to Smyrna to live with his maternal grandparents.
-Family stories state that after a fight his wife Susan took her infant son when she left John & other young children, to be with ? Nicholson, a man that might have been a 'traveling salesman'(see her story).
John never remarried.
According to family members his daughters came to help care for him, until he was no longer able to live alone, then he went to live with his daughters until his death.
It has been said that he might have been blind or severely sight impaired.
By the 1910 Census, John is living in Chase, Lake County, Michigan.
His daughter Minnie gave the death certificate information.
