Maria(h) was the daughter of Thomas Johnson and his wife Helen "Lany" Lane; she was born at home at Sempronius (now Niles), east of Owasco Lake in Cayuga Co., NY. The family later moved to Mt. Morris, Livingston, NY, near Dutch Street, north of Tuscarora. She died November 29, 1883 in Byersville, Livingston, NY.

Maria(h) married William Skilling Johnson on August 18, 1843, son of Lewis Johnson and his wife Margaret Skilling. William was born January 24, 1822 in Tompkins Co., NY, and died May 7, 1891 in Livingston Co., NY.

Bloody dysentry was the cause of death for toddlers Thomas and John. John died on the day of his brother Thomas' funeral.

Obituary for Maria(h) Johnson found in the scrapbook of Ella (Moseley) Johnson by Russell Lewis Warner: "Mrs. Mariah Johnson beloved wife of W.S. Johnson of Byersville, NY departed this life in great peace at her home Thursday afternoon of November 29, 1883 aged 62 yrs 5 mo. A very large attendance of relatives and friends was present at the funeral at the house which took place at the house Sunday morning December 2 [1883]. Preaching by Rev. G.R. Harvey of Bryersville. She was buried at Dutch Street one mile north of Tuscarora. The singing was appropriate to the occasion. Mrs. Johnson was much beloved by all who knew her. Her husband takes the opportunity to return his sincere thanks to all his neighbors and friends for their great kindness."
