He was born April 8, 1928, in Merrill, to Vivian Welk who died in childbirth and was adopted by her brother, Robert Welk, and his wife, Ida [obituary error ... Robert and Ida Welk are actually his maternal grandparents].
Forty-five years ago, June 12, 1948, Roger married Darlene Fischer in Merrill. They have a son, David (Caroline), and a daughter, Vivian (Randy) Schlueter. Roger's five grandchildren, Angie and Aimee Schlueter and David, Kristin and Katie Welk, were his pride and joy. They will never forget his nightly phone calls to say "Good night, sweet dreams, God bless you, and don't forget your prayers."
In 1977, Roger retired after 30 years as a salesman at Miller Home Furnishings. He was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, the American Legion and the U.S. Navy Alumni Club. He was a Navy veteran of WWII.
Roger loved animals. His many hobbies included books and videotapes of animals. He spent many hours watching the birds, squirrels and chipmunks around the feeders. Polly, the granddaughters' poodle, made daily visits to 'grandpa.'
In addition to family listed above, Roger is survived by his sister Ruth Beltz, Oshkosh. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were held July 8, 1993, at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill; Rev. Dale Kuck officiating. Entombment was at Merrill Memorial Park Mausoleum, Merrill. Schram-Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, was in charge of the arrangements.
