Irene Marie Tanghe was the second of two daughters born to Alois Tanghe and Alice De Volder in Hartwick, Iowa. Around 1923 the family moved to Moline where she graduated from the Moline High School in 1936.

On 12 June 1937 she married Joseph J Fiems and together they had six children. During WWII she held the home front with two young children while her husband answered the country's call in the U.S. Navy. During her husband's time in service, their 18 month old daughter Michele surrendered to the severe health issues she had been born with. Unfortunately her husband could not make it home in time despite jumping ship to do so. Fortunately he returned to her and their young son Joey Jr. after serving his country admirably.

Except for a short two-year stay in Arizona, she and Joe lived in Moline all her life. Both worked at her father-in-law's business and in 1955 bought this tavern from him. Known as "The Wooden Shoe", it was located directly across the street from the Moline Iron Works. Joe also added a bait shop.

Irene was a strong-willed woman. Diagnosed with cancer, she finally succumbed to the disease five years longer than was forecast. At the age of 48 she left behind her husband and five young children. She was preceded in death by her daughter Michele and her father.
