Joseph "J" Fiems, the eldest of three boys born to Camiel & Elizabeth Fiems, lived most of his younger life in the Moline area. He met and married Irene Marie Tanghe in 1937 and they eventually had six children together. Joe served in the U. S. Navy from March 1944 to December of 1945 serving on the U.S.S. Stag, a water tender, in the Pacific Theater and saw combat as a 20 mm naval gunner in several major battles. He bought his father's business, the Wooden Shoe Tavern and together with his ran it for many years. After Irene's passing Joe sold the tavern and moved to Port Byron. In 1968 he married Margery Hull Leydens who had been a friend of Irene's. He bought the Riverview Inn, ran it for several years then sold it and became a custodian for Black Hawk College until his retirement in 1978. He was an avid fisherman and hunter for much of his life.
