Illness Is Fatal To Barney Smith

Barney Smith, 79, 6 Locust St., Montrose, died Wednesday in Montrose General Hospital after an illness.

Born in Midland Park, N.J., a son of the late Amos and Elizabeth Smith, he was a building contractor in Ridgewood, N.J., from 1914 to 1960, when he retired. He and his wife, the former Carrie Gunta [sic] (Junta) moved to Montrose in 1962. Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary Aug. 5. He was a member of Montrose First Presbyterian Church.

Others surviving are a son, Alfred B., Montrose; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, John E., Midland Park, and Gerry E., Fair Lawn, N.J., and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, Montrose, with services by Rev. Harold Jenkins and Rev. Walter Dick, executive director of the Montrose Bible Conference. Interment, Montrose Cemetery. Friends may call at the Robert A. Barton Funeral Home, 74 Church St., today after 7 p.m.

I am aware that the grave marker has a different year than the memorial, however, the social security record indicates that Barney was born in 1893 as does his World War I draft registration, which was written in his own hand. If anyone has a birth record that shows a different date, I will be happy to change it.
