Alexander Muir Jr. was born at the farm of Dale, Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland. He was a son of Alexander and Marjorie (Tulloch) Muir, both originally of Sanday, Orkney Islands. He and his brother, David, immigrated to America in about 1880.

Alexander and David became home builders and contractors and lived in the Mt. Tabor area of Portland. Alexander Jr. married Effie Edwinna Bishop, daughter of Elizabeth Jane Adams and William Randolph Bishop, in 1887 in Portland. Alexander and Effie had 4 surviving children: Myrtle May, Alfred Bishop, William Reginald, and Estella June Muir. An infant son died in 1896. Effie died in 1901 at age 32 as a result of childbirth complications two days after the birth of daughter Estella.

In 1905 Alexander married Kate Gibbs of Portland, daughter of Governor Addison C. Gibbs and Margaret M. (Watkins) Gibbs. Kate and Alexander had no surviving children, but Kate raised Alexander and Effie's children as she would have her own. Alexander passed away at the Oregon State Hospital, Salem, Marion County after a short illness. He was 78 years old.
