American motion picture and television director-actor of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Directed many popular TV series such as "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Starsky & Hutch," and "Hill Street Blues." His best-known film roles include: Gabby Johnson (a parody of the Western sidekick actor George "Gabby" Hayes) in "Blazing Saddles" (1974), Deputy Art Galt in "First Blood" (1982) and the foreman Swick in "The River" (1984).
