E.E.SOMES, 84, DIES SUDDENLY; BURIAL MONDAY


Elmer Ellsworth Somes, a familiar figure in Chicago Heights political and fraternal life for forty-four years, died suddenly at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the dinner table at his home, 3854 Grand Avenue, Chicago. He was 84 years old.


Funeral services are tentatively set for two p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian cemetery on Chicago Road. the body will be brought to the Spindler-Koelling funeral home tomorrow.


Mr. Somes is survived by his wife, the former Nellie Burns; two daughters, Edith Pearl Miller, of Peoria, and Grace M. Taggs, of Chicago, and a son, Albert Lane Somes, of Chicago Heights. His first wife, Nellie Johnson, died in 1908. There is also a sister, Mrs. Clara Johnson, of Billings, Mont., along with eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.


Mr. Somes was born August 4, 1861, at Amboy and came to Chicago Heights in 1891. His congenial manner immediately made many friendships and he became one of the charter members of the Chicago Heights volunteer fire department in 1893. he rose rapidly in the department and at the time of its dissolution in 1916 he held the rank of assistant chief under M.S. Philip.


Always an active Republican, Mr. Somes served two terms as alderman from the old second ward and ten years as city street superintendent, in which he established a record of efficient and devoted public service.


He was a past noble grand of the Odd Fellows lodge. Lodge members will take part in the final rites Monday afternoon.
