Sister Joanne Horn, SSND
(formerly Sister Mary Jean Magdalene)

First Profession August 6, 1948
Motherhouse
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

In her autobiography, Sister Joanne introduced herself: "May 9, 1929, I came into the world, the oldest of five children born to Oscar and Veronica Horn. The place — Sheboygan, Wisconsin. At baptism, I was given the name Joanne Gabrielle — with the family name of Horn!"

Joanne attended Holy Name Grade School from kindergarten through eighth grade. She loved her Notre Dame teachers and spent many hours doing church work with them, especially with Sister M. Gisella Schoemann. She relates, "On one occasion my mother asked me why I didn't take my bed along. I told her that someday I would. That 'someday' arrived on September 25, 1944, my entrance into the candidature. It was after a visit to 1324 North Milwaukee Street and about four weeks after beginning my sophomore year in our public school."

After her profession in 1948, Sister Mary Jean Magdalene Horn was missioned to St. Agnes, Butler, Wisconsin, where, in eight years, she taught every grade from one to six, consecutively. Of those years, Sister commented, "St. Agnes Convent was a small and very homey mission, a good place to begin in the family of God and Notre Dame."

Sister left her "dream" mission to teach sixth grade at Sacred Heart School, Appleton, Wisconsin. There she received the news that her father had died suddenly of a heart attack. Sister wrote that his death had a profound effect on her for many years.

Grief has no boundaries. In 1964, Sister Joanne was the eighth grade teacher at St. Aloysius School, West Allis, Wisconsin. Her only brother, Eugene, along with his wife and their seven-month-old son came to visit her. Just ten days later, Sister received an emergency call that her beloved brother Eugene had been killed in a head-on collision. Amid her grief, one fact eased her pain, "To be able to attend the wake and funeral was indeed a great comfort and consolation."

The next 25 years saw Sister Joanne serving in many states besides Wisconsin — Indiana, Arizona, New Mexico, and Mississippi — where her many skills were used in schools, in community service, and in caring for the sick and elderly. Although she loved to travel, she labeled some of these years as very difficult.

She retired at Notre Dame of Elm Grove in 2001, where she was known for her bright smile and quick, little giggle. She died of a stroke on October 4, 2010, peaceful now in God's loving arms.

– Marie LeClerc Laux, SSND

She was an educator for over 30 years, serving as a teacher and principal. Later, she ministered in various community service roles. Upon her retirement, Sister Joanne continued to serve through her prayers and presence.
