Deceased was married to Clara Brown April 10,1872. To this union eleven children were born, three of whom died in infancy, the remaining eight are: Lura Walters, Med Walters, Grace Walters, and Ellis Walters all of Robinson; and Mrs Percy Cobb of Palestine, Ill; Mrs William Kinney of Washington DC; Mrs Willis Sylvester of Lapel, Indiana; and Claude Walters who is with Com B somewhere in France.
In 1864, at the age of 17 he heeded his country's call and enlisted in Co F 5th Illinois Cavalry, under Captain J. H. Wood. He was made corporal of his company and in this capacity he served two years and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
His wife died twenty years ago last March, leaving him with the eight children, some quite small. He assumed the responsibility of both father and mother and kept them in his home; for this he has been rewarded by their constant care during his three years of helplessness. He was stricken with paralysis three years ago and from that time until death was confined to his home. He was at the time of his death 72 years, 10 months, and 25 days, being one of the youngest of the Civil War veterans and one of the seven old soldiers who have died in Robinson this summer.
