Fred Bird, 84, a longtime Grays Harbor resident, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1988, in an Elma nursing home.

Fred was born March 21, 1903 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Elvira Shaffer and William Bird. He moved to Oregon in a covered wagon when he was six years old and lived there for two years then moved to Idaho where he farmed until he was 18. He then moved to Grays Harbor.

He was a brakeman for the Donovan-Corkery logging train for a number of years and worked for ITT Rayonier from 1936 until 1969 when he retired as the head sawyer. He helped out at his wife's business, Flowers By Esther, from 1975 until 1986.

On March 17, 1933, Fred married Daisy Nichols in Montesano.

On Jan. 11, 1942 he married Esther Ekstrom McAllister in Aberdeen. She died on Jan. 13, 1987.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Woodworkers Union.

Survivors include two stepsons, Robert McAllister of Elma and Richard McAllister of Lynnwood; four step grandchildren, Scott McAllister of Aberdeen, Mrs. Mel (Jodee) Beeson, Robbie and Richie McAllister, all of Elma; a nephew, John Edwards of Aberdeen; two great grandchildren and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at the Fern Hill Funeral Home 11 a.m., Friday. Additional arrangements will be announced in the classified ad funeral notice section.

His siblings were Clarence Bird, James Bird, Ethel Linn Bird Humphrey Murray, John Bee Bird, Everett Bird, Susan May Bird Sloan & William Jennings Bird.
