Emilie was born in Germany. She was the daughter of Johann and Eva Rosina Hedt Grams. Following the death of her father in 1880, she immigrated with her mother and several siblings to Texas. Throughout her life, Emilie suffered from vision problems that eventually led to blindness. She lived with her mother and stepfather until her mother's death. Later she lived with her sister Amalie and then her brother Robert. She died in Houston, Texas.
