Son of James H. Hull and Mary Ann (Evans). Husband of Eliza Ann Blalock. Father of Eddie A.; Mary Belle; William David; and Arthur Blalock Hull.

Civil War. Co. A, 41st Ilinois Infantry and received a medical discharge on April 27, 1862, reasons given were listed as "General Debility, Chronic Bronchitis and Extreme Emaciation, the result of Rubiola"; also noted in the explanation was "unfit for duty for three months" and "will not recover unless discharged." He was described in the muster rolls as 5'11", blond hair, blue eyes, worked as a farmer and lived in Friends Creek Township, Macon Co., Illinois.

John and Eliza Ann, along with sister Hannah C. and her husband Richard J. Blalock, moved to Kansas in October, 1867.

The John R Hull family was on the Miami Co., Kansas list of "Persons Who Have Been Rendered Destitute by the Ravages of Grasshoppers During the Past Summer, from March and April, 1875."
