Chico Record, Wednesday Morning, June 15, 1910, pg 1 col 5: Abner Mack Dies of Injuries In Runaway At West Branch. Abner Mack died at the Waite Hotel, West Branch, Tuesday morning shortly after midnight as the result of injuries he received Saturday afternoon in a runaway accident on the steep grade of the Humboldt road, one half mile west of West Branch. From the time he was picked up in the road by his stepson, W.A. Swift, he never regained consciousness.

Mack, who was aged seventy-two years, in company with W.A. Swift, went to the home of harry Shuffleton near Forest Ranch early Saturday morning and secured a cow which they started to take to Swift’s home at Sutton House, Butte Meadows. The aged and the young man took turns about at walking and driving the cow. It was Mack’s time to drive when the West Branch grade was reached. The horses took fright and ran. Swift was behind several yards and heard Mack cry out to the horses to stop but the animals disappeared down the hill in a cloud of dust. When Swift reached the foot of the hill he found his stepfather lying in a heap with his left shoulder broken, his skull fractured, and unconscious. He hurried to West Branch for aid and the injured man was taken to the hotel conducted by Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Waite. There the old man remained until he died Tuesday morning without regaining consciousness.

The funeral will be held in this city Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from Fetters & Williams mortuary chapel. Interment will be made in the Chico cemetery. Coroner Wallace will hold the inquest this morning at 9 o’clock in the chapel.

The deceased was born in Vermont seventy-two years ago. He came to California and to Butte county thirty years ago and had since resided in Butte and Plumas counties. He was engaged in dairying for a number of years. Three years ago his wife died. He will be buried beside her in the local cemetery.

The deceased only recently recovered from a severe attack of pneumonia but was hale and hearty on the morning of the accident. The fatal accident occurred between 2 and 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon.
