SAINTLY WOMAN GOES TO HER REWARD
Mrs. Elizabeth
Stegall Dent, venerable and beloved woman, and resident of Newnan for
three-quarters of a century, passed away Sunday night at her home on College
street. Although in her ninetieth year, she had been remarkably active up to a
short time ago, taking a keen interest in the affairs of her home, her church,
and the community, and was a most interesting companion at all times. She was a
daughter of Rev. W. W. Stegall, the builder and pastor of the first Methodist
church erected in Newnan, and she remained loyal throughout her life to the
faith and precepts of this pioneer preacher. She was active in church work
until forced by advancing years and increasing feebleness to retire to the
quietude of her home, passing her remaining days in companionship with her
children, grandchildren, and other loved ones. If she lived long, she also
lived usefully and righteously, and in dying leaves scores of grieving friends
to mourn her departure.
Mrs. Dent was the widow of the late Jos. E. Dent, one
of Newnan’s prominent citizens, who died many years ago. Children surviving her
are Mr. J. E. Dent, Mrs. Jos. T. Kirby and Mrs. N. E. Powel, of this city, and
Mr. H. W. Dent and Mrs. Geo. W. Ramey, of Atlanta.
Funeral services were held
at the residence Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock conducted by her pastor, Rev.
John P. Erwin, who was assisted by Dr. E. W. Stone. The interment was at Oak
Hill.
