Obera Nichols, 78, of Goshen, died late Monday afternoon, October 8, 2007, at Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi, to James A. and Verna (Owens) Tennison, on August 14, 1929. She married Daniel B. "Dan" Nichols on October 12, 1949. He survives.

A homemaker, Mrs. Nichols worked for three years at First National Bank, Richardson Homes Corporation for ten years, and McCollough Construction Company for three years. Following retirement she volunteered at Elkhart General Hospital for eight years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Elkhart for 50 years and First Baptist Church, Goshen for seven and a half years. She loved her church and all its related activities.

Mrs. Nichols and her twin sister, Valera, developed diabetes at the age of 6 and she was a founding member of the Lay Diabetic Society of Elkhart. In 1986 the twins were awarded a bronze medal by the Joslin Diabetic Center in Boston, Massachusetts for surviving 50 years with diabetes.

She was a prolific reader and delighted in researching all thins medical. She had attended Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Mrs. Nichols is survived by her husband, Dan; a daughter, Deborah (James) Kauffman of Goshen; three grandchildren, Heather Joy (Sean) Neil, Stephen Kauffman and Mark Kauffman; and a great-grandson, Ronan Neil.

She was preceded in death by her parents and twin sister, Valera Pace.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm., Friday, October 12, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.

A 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the funeral home. Pastor Greggory Lanzen of the First Baptist Church, Goshen, will officiate.

Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Goshen.
