From Great Falls Tribune 10-18-2010:
Jan Albright, 69, of Shelby, a retired teacher, died from complications of surgery related to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Friday at a Great Falls hospital.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. Following burial at the Chester Cemetery, a reception will be held at the church. Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester is handling the arrangements.
Beloved wife, sister, mother, Nana, aunt, teacher, and friend, Jan Albright, died Friday evening, Oct. 15, 2010.
When Jan was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease this past February, she composed one of her famous poems to communicate her thoughts and emotions. A portion of that poem follows:
"Three of my favorite things are hard to do – talking, eating and kissing. I can cope with this problem, if these are the only things missing. My speech is difficult to understand, but I can still walk, type and cook. When these abilities fail me, I'll sit down and read (or write) a book."
Jan was a very positive and encouraging person; she demonstrated hope and optimism in all aspects of her life. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Janice Irene Standley was born Jan. 6, 1941, in Helena, Mont. She was one of six daughters born to Lester and Bertha (Fraser) Standley. Her childhood years were spent at the Green Meadow Farm in Helena and the Standley farm in the Castner Falls area near Cascade. Jan graduated from Cascade High School as co-salutatorian in 1959. She maintained lifelong friendships with many of her classmates and they celebrated their 50th high school reunion last year in Cascade.
Jan continued her schooling at the University of Montana in Missoula, where she graduated in 1963 with a degree in Secondary Education (specializing in commercial and French courses). Later she received certification to teach English, which enabled her to give impromptu and frequent grammar lessons to family friends. In the years that followed, Jan taught high school and middle school at Huntley Project H.S., White Pine H.S. (in Ely, Nevada), and the Chester Schools, where she retired in 1988. She began her second career with Farm Services in Shelby, where she served as an administrative assistant.
Back in 1970-71, Jan worked at Bjornsen, Inc. with her sister, Elaine, and future sister-in-law, Arlene, who introduced her to the "love of her life", Gerald Albright. Jan married Jerry and his two children, Kathy and Kirby, on Aug. 15, 1971, at the family farm near Cascade. They made their home in Chester where they were very active in the community, their church, and the school. In 1981, they purchased a farm north of Devon. When the Albright's retired in 2006, they sold the farm and moved to Shelby. They enjoyed travelling and visiting their family and friends. Memorable trips were made to England, to Ketchikan, Alaska to Chandler, Ariz., and recently to Branson, Mo.
Jan currently served on the board of the Marias Medical Center and was a longtime member of the Eastern Star. She volunteered at both the Cedar Closet and the Shelby hospital gift shop. She also served as a judge at many speech meets in the Chester and Shelby schools. During her teaching years at Chester, she served as cheerleading advisor and enjoyed chaperoning her French students on summer trips to France.
Most everyone knows of Jan's love of reading and writing poetry. Over the years she wrote her Christmas letters in poetic verse to special family and friends. She also wrote poetic eulogies and remembrances to important people in her life. She was an avid reader; she was especially a loyal fan of author, Danielle Steele. Jan was also a tremendous cook; her caramels, pretzels, and decorated brownies for special occasions and church functions were always a hit with everyone! She recently compiled two family recipe cookbooks called "Family Favorites". She also composed several family reunion booklets as family keepsakes. Just for the fun of it, Jan collected salt-and-pepper shakers and angel figurines. Jan will be remembered as a person who loved life, was always happy, and had a perpetual smile on her face.
Jan is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jerry Albright of Shelby; her daughter and husband, Kathy and Mark Duffy, and their daughter, Markie of Taylor Mill, Kentucky; her daughter-in-law, Caroline Albright, and her two children, Danielle and Brandon of Alford, England; two sisters, Louise (Bob) Falk of Great Falls and Kathy (Doug) James of Billings; brother-in-law Keith Olsen of Cascade; sister-in-law Arlene (Paul) Meissner of Chester; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and-nephews, and numerous young people and friends who were loved by Jan and returned the love to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kirby Albright, in 1995; three sisters, Elaine Schuchard in 2008, Becky Olsen in 2008, and Paulette Linabary in 2010; and two brothers-in-law, Don Schuchard and Mike Webster.
