James Birch died July 15th 1937 during a Mine Explosion at the Baker Mine Northwest of Dugger owned by Glendora Coal Company. Not only did Jim and his brother Oscar Paul "Bud" Birch pass in the explosion, so did Lester Alumbaugh which was his Wife Dorothy's Brother. A total of 20 were killed in the explosion along with 9 others which were injured critically, while 174 were able to escape.

James left behind his wife Dorothy and 4 children.
