In 1860, he was a machinist living in Springfield Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Seven Valleys, York County, February 17, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day in Harrisburg as a private with Co. B, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). Falling ill, he was hospitalized at Lexington, North Carolina, and then transferred to in McDougall U.S. Hospital, New York, where he was discharged the service by surgeon's certificate July 1, 1865, for reasons that are indecipherable on his discharge certificate.
