Mrs. Matilda (Mattie) Berger, 84, of 620 St. Claire Ave., died Saturday afternoon at St. Nicholas Hospital. The former Matilda Lorfeld was born Jan. 16, 1895, in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late David and Cecilia Lutze Lorfeld. She was educated in the town of Meeme. On June 2, 1917, she and Walter Berger were married. Mr. Berger, a former Sheboygan County Superintendent of schools (1928-1938), died in 1962. Mrs. Berger resided in Madison for 22 years, working at University Hospitals for 18 years before, before moving to Sheboygan in 1970. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, Town of Meeme, and a 50 year member of the Sheboygan Chapter, No. 139, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Walter Berger, Santa Ana, Ca.; two daughters, Mrs. William (Georgina) Wild, Baton Rouge, La., and Miss Evelyn Berger, Edgewater, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Francis Schultz, Neenah; eight grandchildren and one great-grand-child. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. James UCC. The Rev. Charles Barnes, passtor, and the Rev. George Mohr, pastor of Zion UCC, Sheboygan, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at Ramm-Zeigler Funeral Home after 4:30 p.m. today and on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. The Order of Eastern Star will hold a memorial service at 7 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Mrs. Berger's name.
