Grocery chain founder Wile dies yesterday

Ed Wile, 82, president and founder of the Big Chain grocery stores and cafeterias, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in Schumpert Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Wile, who resided at 626 Wilder Place, was a native of Canton, Miss., and had lived in Shreveport since childhood. He organized the Big Chain Co. in 1922 as a subsidiary of the Wiener Loeb Grocery Co.

In 1923, both Wiener Loeb and Big Chain were purchased by a group headed by Mr. Wile. The first Big Chain building was located on Texas Street, and Mr. Wile later developed Uptown, Broadmoor, Lakeshore and Bossier shopping centers which included Big Chain stores and cafeterias.

Mr. Wile was a member of B'nai Zion Temple and had been president of Goodwill Industries, the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse, WLS Investment Co. and the Shreveport Beautification Foundation.

He was also a member of the board of the Better Business Bureau, the Conference of Christians and Jews and the Shreveport Tuberculosis League, and was a director of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Wile was a veteran of World War I.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Osborn Funeral Home with Rabbi Leo Brene of Agudath Achim Synagogue officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Wile's survivors include two daughters, Mrs. John B. Hussey of Shreveport and Mrs. Howard I. Maibach of Kentfield, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. David H. Goldman and Mrs. Hyman B. Badt, both of Shreveport, and Florence S. Wile of Tucson, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.
