Louis Wile Succumbs to Long Illness – Father of Big Chain Leader Dies at 91

Louis Wile, 91, retired businessman and father of I. Ed Wile, president of Big Chain Stores, Inc., died at 7:30 p.m. Friday in his home at 750 Elmwood St. after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in Osborn Chapel with Rabbi David Lefkowitz Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

A resident of Shreveport for the past 49 years, Mr. Wile came here in 1905 from the Sweetbriar Plantation in Sunflower County, Mississippi. He was born July 18, 1863 in Granada [sic], Miss.

Besides the Big Chain president, Mr. Wile is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emily Loeb Wile; one other son, Meyer Wile of Fort Worth, Tex.; three daughters, Mrs. David H. Goldman, Mrs. Hyman B. Badt and Miss Florence Wile, all of Shreveport; one brother, Simon Wile of Henderson, Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. Mike Levy and Miss C. C. Wile, both of Henderson, Ky., and Mrs. I. Levystein of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren, Mrs. Irvin Gassenheimer of Montgomery, Ala., Mrs. Labe Scheinberg of New York City, Mrs. Haword Maibach of New Orleans, Miss Emily Wile and Joe M. Badt, both of Shreveport; two great-grandchildren, Miss Mary T. Gassenheimer of Montgomery, Ala., and Miss Susan Scheinberg of New York City.

He was well known in Shreveport for his interest in gardening activities and often was referee to as the “dean of gardeners.” During World War II he assisted and advised many amateurs in developing “victory” gardens.

Mr. Wile was a member of B’Nai Zion Congregation.

Pallbearers will be Louie Levy, Dewey Sandefur, Dr. W. B. Wiener of Jackson, Miss., Dr. Julian Wiener of Jackson, Samuel G. Wiener, W. B. Wiener, J. L. Wiener, Jules Fogel and Dr. A. A. Herold Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. A. A. Herold Sr., Dr. I. Rougon, Abry S. Cahn, August Loeb, Dr. A. T. Johnson, C. M. Teat, O. D. Roshton, Max Nathan, Raymond S. Morris and the personnel of the Big Chain Stores.
