David Campbell was born in Middletown, Dauphin County, the son of Sophia Campbell. In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Middletown but by 1880 resided in Berks County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and light eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown August 12, 1862, with the 127th Pa Inf and was promoted to quartermaster sergeant on December 1. Honorably discharged with his company on May 29, 1863. Also enlisted in Harrisburg July 30, 1864, with Co. G, 200th Pa Inf, at the rank of 2nd lieutenant. On March 4, he requested a 15-day furlough because his widowed mother was "dangerously ill" and his four brothers were all in the army. Honorably discharged May 30, 1865.
