From FAG contribitor Dennis Brandt, with much thanks for his research: A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New York City April 23, 1861, and mustered into federal service there May 4 as a private with Co. E, 9th New York Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862, he recovered sufficiently to remain on the active roster and honorably discharged at term's end May 20, 1863.
At some point, he moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but managed to escape every census taker. From 1903 through 1906, he served on the Harrisburg City school board, so he likely had been living there for some time prior to that. He was a member of Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R.
