Born c.1715, 17-year-old Matthias Woodruff, (surname spelled "Woodrowfe" on gravestone), survived his elder sibling, Thomas, 20, by little more than a year. The youthful brothers, sons of Thomas and Hannah (nee Ward) Woodruff, share a dual gravestone which appears to be the work of the "Old Elizabethtown Soul Carver II", an unidentified artisan active during the 1720's-30's whose work features winged, mask-like soul effigies that reflect the transition from the earlier skulls to the more face-like images of the later 1700's.
