The 1694 gravestone of Ellena (aka Eleonor) Johnson, who was born c.1633, shares the distinction of being the oldest in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery along with that of her husband, Thomas. The couple's gravestones, made of brown sandstone quarried from the nearby Passaic River, are among the very few from the 1600's still to be seen in New Jersey, as most of the state's original city churchyards have been lost to urban development. Mrs. Johnson's stone is not in its original location, however, as it was moved here (along with her remains) from the 1st Presbyterian Churchyard in Downtown Newark during the 1880's.
Mrs. Johnson, who died in Newark at age 61, is buried next to her husband, 64-year-old Thomas Johnson, who survived her by only 3 days. A native of England, she was born in Tarpoley, Cheshire, the daughter of Arthur Bostocke/Bostwick, and was baptized "Ellin" on December 22, 1633 in St. Helen's Church. She later married Thomas Johnson of New Haven, and the couple and their children were among the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey, which was founded in the mid-1600's by colonists from Connecticut.
Source of father's name, place of birth, baptismal record: "The Families of Old Fairfield" by genealogist Donald Lines Jacobus.
