A native of England, she was born in Tarpoley, Cheshire, the daughter of Arthur Bostocke/Bostwick, and was baptized "Ellin" on December 22, 1633 in St. Helen's Church. She later married Thomas Johnson of New Haven, and the couple and their children were among the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey, which was founded in the mid-1600's by colonists from Connecticut.
