Benjamin Franklin Surby, son of William Surby and Mary Atkinson Surby, was born in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario, Canada in 1838. He had four brothers (Richard W., Joseph H., Edward J., and James)and one sister (Eliza). He was baptized on 27 Jan 1839 at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario, CN.

Benjamin came to Putnam county with his brothers in 1860.

Benjamin served in Company A, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry (The "Iron Brigade") during the Civil War, from 1861 to March of 1863. He lost his left arm during the war, and returned to Granville county where he married Nancy Ann Sherman, the granddaughter of one of the earliest Pioneers in Granville (William Sherman Sr., who settled in Granville in 1833).

Benjamin was a mail carrier after the war, and was elected Granville township tax collector in 1874 and 1878. He and Nancy had 10 children.
