James was married twice. His first marriage was to Isabella in January of 1871. Isabella, and their only child both died later that same year (the child, Thomas Almer Surby, died shortly after birth). He then married Amanda Day, and had three daughters (Anna Surby, Gladys Leile Surby, and Amanda Surby). James died in his rooming house at the state fair, in St. Louis, Missouri. James had been employed at the Arkansas building and also at other exhibits at the fair.
