William served in the Civil War, 36th Iowa Infantry, Company C. He was captured at Mark's Mill (Tyler, Texas) on August 22, 1862. He broke his toe during the transfer as a prisoner and it crippled him for the rest of his life. He received a purple heart for his injuries. After the war, William became a farmer and owned 400 acres.
William died of stomach cancer and he is buried with his wife, Malinda.
