Obituary from the “Daily Register” of Portage, Wisconsin dated 21 Jul 1927:
Passes After
Long Illness

Death Comes to Mrs. Marga-
ret Fleming at Her Home
In Caledonia
- - - - - - - - -
Mrs. John R. Fleming passed away at her home in Caledonia, on Wednesday morning, July 20, 1927, following an illness of several months.
Margaret Clark Shanks, daughter of John and Elizabeth Shanks, pioneers of Caledonia, was born in that town on Nov. 11, 1866. All of her life has been lived in Caledonia, except a few years spent in Milwaukee and Chicago.
On November 10, 1895, she was united in marriage to John R. Fleming who survives her. To this union were born three daughters and two sons. The children are Mrs. Thomas B. Ramsey, Mrs. Earl Baird, Mrs. Walter S. Harvey and John E. Fleming of Caledonia and Thomas Fleming of Columbus. There are eight grandchildren.
Besides the immediate family, she leaves to mourn her loss four brothers: E. B. Shanks, D. W. Shanks and A. B. Shanks, all of Portage, and J. C. Shanks of Pierre, S.D.
Mrs. Fleming was very much of a home woman and her life was devoted to her family and friends. She will be much missed in her home and community, for her kindness and hospitality.
Truly it may be said of Mrs. Fleming “her sons and daughters rise up to call her blessed." To the end of their days they will cherish fond memories of a loving, devoted mother whose self-forgetfulness will ever be their inspiration to noble living.
She followed in her Master's footsteps and went about doing good. She is gone, but not forgotten. Her work on earth is ended, but the influence of her life lives on. We miss her, her place is vacant but it is God’s way. His will be done.
Funeral services from the home on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. E. J. Roberts. Burial in the Shanks cemetery.
