Grace Cannon the daughter of Hugh and Margaret Roarty Cannon was born near Brooklyn on May 7, 1883. She was the youngest of a family of eleven children, three sons and eight daughters.

When she was 14 years old the family moved to Brooklyn where she entered high school and later graduated with the class of 1902.

After teaching for three years in the rural schools of this county she accepted a position in the I Jones store and later with B F Hicks & Co. During the 14 years she was with these firms she won many friends by her kindly courteous ways for it was her pleasure to serve the patrons of these firms as her own personal friends.

She was indeed a loyal friend and those who knew her best loved her most for the kindly sympathy she had for all with whom she came in contact seemed the trait of character which endeared her to all.

Five years ago after a severe attack of influenza, her health began to fail and soon after she was forced to give up her work. Everything possible was done to regain her health and strength but it was of no avail. After a year of much suffering and great weakness death came to relieve her and on Sunday noon February 10, 1924 surrounded by many sorrowing relatives and friends she passed away.

The funeral was held on February 12 at St Patrick's Catholic church. Solemn High Mass was celebrated at 10:30 with the Pastor Rev E W Barron, Celebrant, Rev Kerrigan of Iowa City, Deacon, Rev M J Hannon of Grinnell, Sub-Deacon and Rev Jackson of Colfax, Master of Ceremonies. Joseph Ver Straeten and Paul Keefe served on the altar. Music was sung by the choir of which Grace had been such a faithful member. The Aue Maria was beautifully sung by Ed Mezik and the accompaniment by Mrs Coe Manatt was especially well rendered. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful and mutely testified to the esteem in which she was held.

She leaves to mourn her death the following sisters and brothers: Sarah and John of Brooklyn, Mrs Agnes Roberts of New York, Mrs Margaret Nichols of Davenport, Mary of Iowa City and sister-in-law Mrs Ellen Cannon of Victor besides a host of relatives and friends.

She was laid to rest in Calvary cemetery beside her mother who preceded her in death exactly five years. The pall bearers were: Leonard Baird, Pat Akery, George Hall, John McGrory, Ray Collum and Frank Cline.

The sisters and brothers wish to express their sincere appreciation for the many kindnesses bestowed upon them during their sister's last illness and at the time of her death. The sympathy that prompted those acts made their great sorrow easier to bear.
