Charles V. Decker, 91, of Oneida, a prominent resident of Oneida, who last resided at 242 W. Walnut St. before moving to Syracuse with his wife, Isabelle, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at the James Square Nursing Home, Syracuse, NY.

He was born on July 26, 1914 in Middletown, NY, the son of Frank C. and Minnie Brown Decker. Charles married Isabelle McDivitt April 17, 1943 in Auburn, NY. He graduated from Middletown High School, Fredonia Normal School in 1937 and an MA from Columbia University in 1942, and did graduate work at Syracuse University and Chautauqua Institute. He taught in the Victor, Middletown, and Eden, NY school from 1937 to 1945, and was an instrumental music teacher and Director of Music for the Oneida City Schools from 1945 to 1971. Mr. Decker directed the Oneida Silverware Band and Orchestra from 1946 to 1956 and taught music classes in adult Education for 20 years.

Charles was an active civic leader and received many citations including Man of the Year from both the Chamber of Commerce and Oneidas Club for which he served as president. The Rotary Club presented him with their Roses for the Living Award. He was an honorary member of the Oneida Police Benevolent Association and the Oneida Fire Department which created a medal in his honor for fund raising efforts to purchase emergency equipment. Mr. Decker was active in committee work at the First Presbyterian Church and served on numerous area boards including the United Way, Kallet Civic Center, Oneida Board of Education, BOCES Board of Education, PAC 99, and Oneida Area Arts Council.

Surviving family members are his wife, Isabelle; two sons, Charles Decker and Richard Decker of 418 Seneca Drive, Syracuse, NY 13205, and their wives; three nephews; four granddaughters, and a great- granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 10 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Broad and Stone Streets, Oneida, NY with the Rev. Cathryn Stevenson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be made in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, NY. There are no calling hours but the public is invited to attend the church services.
