Joseph Michael Urbain was born on January 15, 1862 near Bankston, Iowa. Joseph was the son of Quirin Urbain and Mary Kirby. Joseph spent most of his life on a farm near Placid in Dubuque County, Iowa.

He married Catherine Ann McDermott on April 11, 1893 at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa. They were the parents of eleven children - Mary Priscilla, Nora Bernadette, Joseph Quirin, John, Francis, Thomas James, Michael Xavier, an unnamed baby girl, Daniel Anthony, Cyril William and Kathleen Elizabeth.

Joseph died on September 29, 1945 at the family home near Placid after a long illness.
