Gustavus Allbee, one of the oldest residents in the county died, Sunday morning at 10:50 at his home near Pleasant Prairie. He was 83 years of age and a pioneer in this part of the state. His death came at the end of a long and useful career. Mr. Allbee came to this country when it was an unbroken prairie and some parts a tangled wilderness and did his share to develop this part of the state. He had been in failing health for a number of years and his death was not entirely unexpected.
Gustavus Allbee was born in Rockingham, Vermont April 27,1822. Married Miss Eliza Malvina Allbee January 29, 1844. They came to Iowa Dec 6, 1855, and to Muscatine county the following April, where he dug from the soil a competency, owning at one time 1,000 acres of Iowa land. He organized the school district in which he so long resided, furnished the means with which to build the first school house, giving the district ample time to reimburse him, and was largely instrumental in arousing many pupils to aspire to self development. He assisted many people to acquire homes, assuming unusual risks thereby many times, but his confidence was never betrayed by the beneficiaries. His assistance or counsel was probably sought more frequently, by a wider range of persons, through a long series of years, than that of any other man, in either Fulton or Montpeller township, and never in vain. Though he never sought an office, yet during many years he was almost continuously honored with one or more township offices, all of which he filled with credit to himself and advantage to the community. Descended from very early English Puritan colonial stock, with truth, honor, and helpfulness for his ideal, he was ever among the most efficient leaders and supporters of every scheme to promote the physical, moral or spiritual welfare of the community. He was a thoroughly loyal and affectionate husband, a wise and considerate father, an obliging neighbor, a thoroughly good citizen, and, that noblest work of God, an honest man and his children arise up and with one voice call him blessed.
He leaves six children: Mrs. Calista Benshoof, E. A. Allbee, and Mrs. Theda A. Eis all of Pleasant Prairie; Leslie Allbee of Sweetland Center; Mrs. Eliza Malvina Fowler of Grinnell; and G.W. Allbee of Wayne, Nebraska, with their children and grandchildren to mourn their loss, his devoted wife having preceded him to heaven by 12 years.
Early Friday morning he suffered a light stroke of apoplexy and gradually sank away, dying peacefully at 10:50 Sunday forenoon, having attained the ripe age of 83 years, 4 months and 14 days.
The funeral is appointed for 2 o'clock on Tuesday, the 12th, in the M.E. church at Pleasant Prairie, conducted by Rev. Charles C. Brown, of Unity Presbyterian church, a grand son in law of the deceased, assisted by Rev. W.H. Cassell of the Nolo group of churches

Hello! I have recently begun searching for my husband's family. I have found three Find A Grave sites for Gustavus Allbee, # 9563699, #29780719, and #61646938 that I believe need to be changed.
The first one, # 9563699 seems to contradict itself. What is in the writing conflicts with what is in the newspaper article (wife is different, children are different).
The second, #29780719, shows the father as James Allbee (1805-1871), the wife is not shown, but I agree this Gustavus Allbee was born to James and Jane Strickland Allbee. I also agree with the siblings and the children that are shown. Check it out! https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX4V-W6B
The third, #61646938, seems to tell the same story as the newspaper article in, #9563699.
So I propose the copy the text from # 9563699 and add it to #29780719.
The birth/death statistical information for #61646938 seems to be correct. I have checked FamilySearch. Org. You my check at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F8LJ-TYP. Records also confirm the burial at Parr Cemetery. You may check at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XV7M-2W5.
When the changes are complete I believe we can delete # 9563699.
If I can further clarify, do not hesitate to email.
Thanks, Wilma
