In May of 1917 he enlisted in World War I service as a cook being with Co. A. 6th Engineers. He reached Europe in December of 1917, and served overseas with the 3rd division as a corporal. Corp. Frutchey participated in the Champagne-Marne defensive, the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Hensas Sector also at Chateau Thierry sector, and Verdun. He was wounded in May 1918 and gassed in July 1918. He was sent to the base hospital at Vichy where he remained until October when he returned to his company, and was gassed again. He served with the Army of Occupation in Germany from December 1918 until July 1919, and returned to the United Stated in September. He was awarded the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters.
He was employed by the Milwaukee railroad at Oxford Junction when able to work. Mr Frutchey was a member of the Milwaukee Railroad Veterans association. He began his railroad career as a call boy in the Savanna yards.
Mr Frutchey died at the Veterans Hospital at Dwight, Illinois. He had been a patient there since Aug 19, 1943. In 1941 he had been in the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
