In the year 1865 a volunteer in the Union Army, David Cohen, was killed in action and his body was returned for burial to the former Village of Suspension Bridge.
The little community did not have a Jewish cemetery and six men of the Jewish faith banded together and purchased a plot in the rear of Oakwood Cemetery, in Portage road, and there buried the fallen soldier.
