Actor. Born to parents who were school teachers, he attended Boston University, prior to his service with the US Army Air Force during World War II; he was assigned to a B-17 as a navigator. Following his discharge, he studied Drama at Yale University, and began his professional acting career in an episode of the live TV program "Goodyear Playhouse" in 1952; he made his Broadway introduction during that period in the short-lived play "The Shrike" (1953), and followed it with "Fragile Fox" (1954). Over the next twenty years, Powell frequented some of television's notable show from that era, among them "Gunsmoke," "The Defenders" and "Mod Squad," he will perhaps be best remembered by TV audiences for his role of Dr. Eric Lang in the popular supernaturally-themed serial "Dark Shadows." Powell would have memorable character roles in the feature films "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1967), as the villainous CIA director Leonard Atwood in the suspense-filled "Three Days of the Condor" (1975), and the TV-movies "Contract on Cherry Street" (1977) and "War and Remembrance" (1988 and 1989).
