John Cantrell was born in Warren County Tennessee, the sixth child of Peter and Mary Elizabeth Davis Cantrell. In 1848 he moved with his family to Dade County Missouri.
He married Nancy Isabell M. Taylor on Feb. 8, 1859 in Dade County. Nancy was the daughter of Alfred and Mary Polly Priddy Taylor.
According to records from the Adjutant General's Office, John was enrolled on September 8, 1863 at Melville MO. in company "I", 7th Provisional Regiment of Missouri Enrolled Militia.
John was killed by guerrilla forces on June 14, 1864 in Melville, MO.
He and Nancy had two sons, William Taylor, born 20, Dec., 1860 in Polk County, MO. Died 10 Feb., 1955 in Colorado, buried in Plainview Memorial Park, Plainview Texas.
Son James Orlando, born 14, Jan., 1863 in Polk County MO, died 13 March, 1880 in Polk County, buried in the Taylor/Milliken Cemetery, Polk County.
