PACE, MARY DARPINO, 83, of Rosenhayn, died Saturday morning February 16, 2002 at S.J. Hospital - Newcomb in Vineland where she had been hospitalized for the last week. Prior to that she had been a patient at Bishop McCarthy Residence for seven months.
The wife of the late Joseph A. Pace, who died in 1988, she was born in Philadelphia and was the daughter of the late James and Columbia Casale Darpino. Mrs. Pace had lived at her current Rosenhayn address for fifty-two years.
A seamstress by trade, she worked as a pocket setter at Tursini Clothing in Vineland until 1972 and later at Newell and Company in Vineland until retiring in 1981. Her last place of employment was on a part time basis for two years at the Path Mark Supermarket in Vineland where she was the "Demonstration Lady."
Mrs. Pace was an active member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Rosenhayn, was a former member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church and a Third Degree member of the Carmelite Order. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters #852 Mater Salvatoris. Mrs. Pace was well known as a volunteer at S.J. Hospital - Bridgeton. She was a member of the Community Service Chapter of the Bridgeton Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered over 500 hours per year. She was also part of the hospital's "Senior Class."
During her lifetime, Mrs. Pace was an active part of the Rosenhayn community. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Rosenhayn Volunteer Fire Department and the Rosenhayn Senior Citizen Club. For many years she was active as 4-H leader and at one time was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. In addition, Mrs. Pace was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Cumberland County Women's Republican Club. She was also a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (now Unite) and took several trips with the Leisure Hours Travel Club through the Vineland Senior Center.
In 1999, Mrs. Pace was honored for nearly twenty-five years of service as a member of the Cumberland County Family and Consumer Services Advisory Council sponsored by Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service.
She is survived by one son, Joseph A. Pace Jr. of Rosenhayn, one daughter, Mary Pace Macho and her husband Charles of Vineland, one grandson, Joseph Eric Macho, three step grandchildren, Diane, Kevin and Charles Macho and two brothers, Anthony Darpino of Dover, DE and Dominick Darpino and his wife June of Millville. She is also survived by one-step daughter, Jennie "Dolly" Buono of Rosenhayn, two additional step grandchildren, Maria Buono Gaimari and her husband Mike and Natalie Buono and one-step great grandson, Michael Gaimari.
The funeral will originate at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday morning February 21st at 9 o'clock and will be followed by a 10 o'clock Funeral Liturgy at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Morton Avenue, Rosenhayn.
The interment will be made at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rosenhayn.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday evening between 7 and 9.
