US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1840, commenced law practice at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and was presiding judge of the fourteenth judicial circuit of Ohio, 1848 to 1851. In 1855, he was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress and as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Territory of Dakota by President Lincoln, serving 1861 to 1868. He relocated to Missouri in 1868, was appointed associate justice of the State Supreme Court and was dean of the law division of the State University of Missouri, from 1872 until his death.
