Elmer was a miner working at a lead and zinc mine at Baxter Springs, Kansas when he sustained injuries in the mine. His MO death certificate indicated that he was down in the underground mine when he suffered a crushed chest and broken legs. He died at St. John's Hospital in Joplin, MO as a result of traumatic pneumonia. His wife, Agnes, was the informant on the DC, and there was not a known mother and father's name, since he had been an orphan since he was an infant. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Joplin under the direction of Hurlbut Undertaking Company. The death certificate can be viewed at Missouri Digital Archives/death certificates online website.
