Nellie Virginia Forrest was born in Charleston, Missouri in 1879 to Levi Forrest and Lucy Ann (Louisiana) Simmons. According to my grandmother Lucy Ann was always referred to as Louisiana. Nellie Virginia Forrest married Charles Lesley McDowell and lived in Gideon, New Madrid, Missouri until 1920. The story is a sad one after 1914 when her husband a store owner was murdered and shortly thereafter her oldest son was shot and killed by the Sheriff in Gideon after an argument. The family became poor and wandered the country awhile until they settled in Tampa, Florida
