Born in Tokyo, she was educated in England and in California, where she attended Stanford University for three years.
She lived in Providence, R.I., before moving to Pittsfield in 1949.
She had lived in Longmeadow from 1953 to 1979, when she moved to Orleans.
She was a two-term president of the Greater Springfield Junior League, and was a member of the Longmeadow School Committee from 1967 to 1972.
She was a communicant of St. Andrew's Church in Longmeadow and was active in its altar guild, and was its Sunday school superintendent.
She was a volunteer in the Orleans Hospital Aides Society.
She leaves her husband, Russell G. Exley; a son, William R. of Portland, Maine; two daughters, Anne E. Martinson of Billerica and Susan E. Lefferts of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsisters, Jeanne Hinckley of Groveland, Calif., and Nancy Holmes of Williamsburg, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, with burial Wednesday afternoon in Longmeadow Cemetery .
