Alexander J. Granfield, 49, of 89 Fairview St., a 20-year social studies and reading teacher at Kiley Junior High School in Springfield, died Friday at home.

He was also involved with the Adult Education Program.

Born in Boston, he lived many years in Springfield. He moved to Longmeadow 19 years ago.

A graduate of the former Classical High School, he received his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, and his master's degree from Springfield College.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, a national honor society, and the Springfield and National Education Associations.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Springfield Chapter 68, and American Legion Post 462.

He leaves his wife, the former Rosemary Fitzgerald; his father, Michael Granfield of Springfield; a son, Daniel F. at home; and a brother, William of Ludlow. A daughter, Erinn Granfield, died last year.

The funeral will be Tuesday morning at the church with burial in Longmeadow Cemetery . Hafey East Longmeadow Chapels is in charge. Calling hours will be Monday afternoon and evening.
