Son of Celestin and Sofia (Goebel) Obert.

Married Elizabeth Ball in 1876.

Leonard, with his brother, Charles, once bought a large island near Quincy, Illinois. The island still sits in the Mississippi River.

While Leonard and Charles Obert owned the island, it was known as "Obert's Island." They maintained lumber yards, pecan groves, and cattle there. They sold it not long before all such islands were 'obtained' by the government for purposes of national security.

Leonard moved his family to Missouri from his home town of Quincy after selling his island, but like many of his siblings, he is buried in his original home town.
