He was born to Morris and Yetta Edelstein on December 14, 1925. Raised in Brownsville, Texas, he attended Texas A&M University until he joined the Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific theater. After the war, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Ben returned to Harlingen, Texas where he was married to Sharlene Gerrick and raised three children; Steve, Sheryl and Morris Edelstein. Ben helped to build Edelstein's Better Furniture and worked there until he passed on. He will be remembered for his friendship, generosity, and humor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Darling Mouser Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Hebrew Cemetery. The American Legion Post 43 Funeral Honor Guard under the direction of commander Raul Leal will be providing military honors at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, Ben's family is requesting that memorial gifts in his name be made to the Edelstein Endowment at the UTB-TSC Office of Development, 80 Fort Brown, Brownsville, TX 78520, (956) 548-8708.
