According to his obituary, attached, William Shearer, was born at Ashe County, North Carolina. He married first, Nancy C. Johnson at Nodaway County, Missouri on Mar 4, 1852. They moved to Iowa where they had five sons between 1853-1863. They were: Marion, Jacob, Thomas, David and William.

The family arrived by wagon in Oregon in 1864. They spent a year in Yamhill County, Oregon, then settled at Dilley (Forest Grove, OR) where they purchased farm property on the Horace Parsons donation land claim. Shearer was a long time active member of the Old School Baptists in the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church there.

After Nancy's death at Dilley in 1865 he married second, widow Mary E. Mooneyham (nee Russell) , on November 5, 1866 at Marion County, Oregon. They had one child, Nancy Anna. Mary died at Dilley, Oregon, on April 10, 1879. She and William's first wife Nancy are both interred at Oak Knoll Cemetery there.

He married third, a widow, Mrs. Mary Martin, on January 26, 1880. They moved to Klickitat County in about 1885. She died on September 5, 1893 and is interred at this cemetery. He married a fourth time, to (unknown) on December 18, 1894.

William Shearer died at Montavilla, Portland, Multnomah County in 1899. He was survived by his fourth wife and his 5 sons and daughter Nancy Anna from his first and second marriages.

[He is incorrectly listed on a March 2000 monument located at Oak Hill/Parsons Cemetery in Dilley (Forest Grove) Oregon. He is interred here. His first and second wives, Nancy (Johnson) and Mary (Mooneyham) are, however, interred at Oak Hill/Parsons Cemetery].
