John Maury Hunt was the 11th child of 13 children born to Squire Hunt and his wife Sidney Cooper Hunt. Sometime after 1850 the Hunt family moved from TN to Webster County, MO. In addition to the siblings listed on this memorial, John also had an older brother, Daniel J. Hunt, born in 1834 and a sister, Elizabeth Euphrates Hunt, born in 1841. Their deaths and burial information are unknown.

On Oct 22, 1863, John married Sarah Monroe Jameson in Webster County, MO. They had one son, George W. Hunt, born about 1870 in Webster Co, MO. His son was most likely named for his uncle, George W. Hunt. In 1880 John and Sarah were living in Nilwood, Illinois. By 1885 they were living in Wellington, Sumner County, Kansas. John and Sarah adopted a daughter, Esther Lynne, sometime between 1890 and 1900. Esther, who was called by her middle name, was born about 1890. On the 1900 census, John and Sarah had Lynn and two of their nieces living with them, Mary E. Owen, age 15, and Frances M. Friend, age 5. Esther Lynne and Frances were born in Kansas and Mary in Missouri.

John Maury Hunt was a physician. He went to Christian College in Springfield, MO and then Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO and graduated in 1878 from St. Louis Medical College.
